DISCRIMINATION IN THE WORKPLACE

Amongst different types of discrimination faced by men and women at workplaces, age discrimination is fast becoming the most common form, says a recent survey by business information provider Croner.

The research indicated that 11% of participants feel they have been discriminated against, with the number of men and women experiencing discrimination almost equal. These figures emerged less than a year after new laws were implemented to prevent discrimination at workplaces.

Sam Bisgrove, Lead Consultant at Proactive People, says: Despite the massive efforts to ensure all employers were aware of how to comply with age discrimination legislation, this form of prejudice has quickly become one of the more prominent forms of workplace discrimination defined by employment law.

The research also found that while 3% of the participants felt discriminated on grounds of their race or disability, only 2% believed they have been discriminated against due to their sexual orientation or religion or belief.

There is, however, some good news. A majority of the respondents, i.e. 73% of the group, believe they have never been the victim of any discrimination on the grounds of sex, age, race, religion or belief, sexual orientation or disability.
